tanvi This has to be one of my favourite songs of all time - I'm not exaggerating here. In this track, Cahill uses Frank O’Hara’s beautiful poem Having A Coke With You as a canvas for their floaty synth instrumentals and melancholy vocal melodies. The lyricism on this track is just as beautiful as the poem it draws inspiration from and its intricate production always makes it a worthwhile listen each time.

lyrics

I remember
Every second
Kept em in my useless brain
Rolled up in my denim pockets
And taken out on desperate days

It’s always the same
It’s always the same
It’s always the same
And it’s always grey

Cut my teeth in graveyard city
Public gardens after dark
Academia disgusts me but
Tell your mother that I’m smart

I put both hands to the feeling and i feel it fall apart

Frank O’Hara:

“Having a coke with you
Is even more fun than going to San Sebastian
Irún, Hendaye, Biarritz, Bayonne
Partly because in your orange shirt
You look like a better happier St. Sebastian
Partly because of my love for you
Partly because of your love for yoghurt
Partly because of the secrecy our smiles take on
Before people and statuary
It is hard to believe when I'm with you
That there can be anything as still,
As solemn as unpleasantly definitive as statuary
When right in front of it
In the warm, New York 4 o'clock light,
We are drifting back and forth between each other
Like a tree breathing through its spectacles.”

In the morning I am there
Foggy eyed and unbrushed hair
This is exactly what I want
And that’s exactly why I’m scared

But if it comes to speak or die
How could I be statuary
When I could be standing next to you tonight

I look at you
and I would rather look at you
than all the portraits in the world

I look at you
and I would rather look at you
than all the portraits in the world.

It seems they were all cheated of some marvelous experience
Which is not going to go wasted on me
Which is why I am telling you about it.
